“Women in journalism”, central theme of the XI Ibero-American Press Meeting

The Association of the Press of Huelva and the Ibero-American Cultural Association organized this activity, which included the photographic exhibition "Pioneers" and a round table with key figures from the world of communication in Huelva. The event also featured greetings from well-known journalists.

On December 14th, the Jesus Hermida Communication Center in Huelva hosted the inauguration of the photographic exhibition "Pioneers," featuring portraits of women who have contributed to the history of journalism in the province of Huelva. This activity was part of the XI Ibero-American Press Meeting organized by the Ibero-American Cultural Autumn (OCIb), the Association of the Press of Huelva, and the Ibero-American Cultural Association.

The images of over fifty women journalists, captured by photographer Paco Gil, are part of this exhibition, taking a journey through the history of the profession from the perspective of women. It spans from the early women journalists practicing in Huelva in the late 19th century to those who continue the profession today. While many deserving names may not be included in this exhibition, it serves as a good representation of the role of women in journalism. This is particularly noteworthy considering that, although journalism is now predominantly practiced by women, there are still many achievements to strive for, such as increased representation of women in leadership positions within the media industry.

The exhibition features images of pioneering women from Huelva, such as María Luisa Muñoz de Vargas or Maruja Beviá, as well as those who have served as directors of media outlets, such as Ana Vives, or have received recognition for their work, both within and outside the province of Huelva, like Esther Bazán. Each of these women dignifies a wonderful profession, represented in Huelva by many other names that dedicate their time every day to reporting the news and disseminating what happens around us.

Following the exhibition opening, a roundtable discussion on "The Presence of Women in Journalism: Past, Present, and Future" took place in the Auditorium of the Communication Center. The participants included Sully Fuentes, from Uruguay, president of the Ibero-American Press Correspondents Association (ACPI); Guadalupe Ruiz, vice president and former president of the Huelva Press Association; María José Maestre, journalist at Canal Sur Huelva and former president of the Huelva Press Association; Inma León, journalist at El Español and commentator at Canal Sur and RTVE; and Rocío Romero, a journalist involved in various nationally broadcast programs.
