Inauguration ceremony of the Jesús Hermida Communication Center in an open day
On Thursday, March 28, 2019, the Jesús Hermida Communication Center officially opened its doors. The event was attended by the journalist's widow, Begoña Fernández, and their children, Jaime and Mavi, along with some of their professional and friends, including Nieves Herrero, Mariló Montero, Irene Domínguez (manager of programs at Antena 3), Nemesio Fernández (president of the Spanish Federation of Journalists Associations - FAPE), Eva Navarrete (dean of the College of Journalists of Andalusia), Carlos Garcia Hirschfeld, Milagros Ayllón (from Antena 3 TV), and Alberto Maeso (from TVE), among others.
In an emotional ceremony presided over by the Mayor of Huelva, Gabriel Cruz, attendees took a guided tour to explore the facilities and contents of the Center. The project was a joint effort between the City Council through the Department of Culture, Tourism, and Promotion of Huelva Abroad, and the Association of the Press of Huelva. The family of Jesús Hermida, Radio Televisión Española, Antena 3, and other private entities and individuals donated or provided material for the installation, including the family of journalist Pedro Erquicia.
Begoña Fernández expressed gratitude on behalf of the attendees, stating, "Today is one of the most emotional days of my life, as it undoubtedly is for Mavi and Jaime, the children of Jesús. We all agreed that there was no better destination for what we treasured from his father and my husband than this, which the City Council and the Press Association so generously dedicate to what he loved so much, communication.
I don't think there is a greater recognition or a more extraordinary tribute than what you are doing here today, in his beloved city.
With this Communication Center bearing his name and holding the testament of his professional work, to which he dedicated himself body and soul, you are honoring his memory beyond what he would ever have dared to imagine.
What I want is for mine to be a well-done work. I heard him say it over and over again while he continued to weave projects or stories to tell... I don't think I'll ever see anyone put so much of themselves, so much passion, and so much effort into a vocation. So if he made his professional work his entire life, there is no better tribute to his life than what this Center pays to his professional work."
From this day forward, and during the hours of 10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, the Jesús Hermida Communication Center (CCJH) begins its journey. The installation, located at 1 Adolfo Suárez Street, Huelva, is open for visits. The center aims to provide Huelva with a unique museum, educational, and research space in Spain. The project was supported unanimously by the Municipal Corporation of Huelva and represents the realization of a proposal presented several years ago.
The CCJH is designed to be an active facility with a permanent exhibition primarily dedicated to Jesús Hermida, complemented by temporary exhibitions and educational and informative activities. The goal is to help visitors understand the evolution of communication and learn about the various systems and procedures used to make it possible. The Center aims to be an international reference for those interested in closely exploring the reality and evolution of media and journalism. The opening hours are from 10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00, Tuesday through Sunday.
