"Women in journalism", central theme of the XI Ibero-American Press Meeting

Category: Actividades

"The Press Association of Huelva and the Ibero-American Cultural Association organize this event, which has included the photographic exhibition 'Pioneras' and a roundtable with key figures from the field of communication in Huelva, along with greetings from renowned journalists."

"The Communication Center Jesús Hermida in Huelva hosted, on Thursday, December 14th, the inauguration of the photographic exhibition 'Pioneras,' featuring the faces of women who have contributed to the history of journalism in the province of Huelva. This activity was included in the 11th Ibero-American Press Encounter, organized by the Ibero-American Cultural Autumn (OCIb), the Press Association of Huelva, and the Ibero-American Cultural Association.

The images of more than fifty women journalists, captured by photographer Paco Gil, are part of this exhibition that takes a journey through the history of the profession from the perspective of women, from the first ones practicing the craft in Huelva in the late 19th century to those practicing it today. Although many deserving names are missing from this display, it serves as a good representation of the role of women in journalism. Moreover, considering that nowadays it is a profession predominantly carried out by women, there are still many achievements to be made, as seen, for example, in the presence of women journalists in leadership roles.

The exhibition showcases images of pioneering women from Huelva, such as María Luisa Muñoz de Vargas or Maruja Beviá, as well as those who have been directors of media outlets, such as Ana Vives, or have received recognition for their work, both within and outside the province of Huelva, like Esther Bazán. Each of them dignifies a wonderful profession, represented in Huelva by many other names that dedicate their time every day to reporting current events and spreading awareness of what is happening around us."

"After the opening of the exhibition, a roundtable discussion on 'The Presence of Women in Journalism: Past, Present, and Future' was held in the Auditorium of the Communication Center. The participants included Sully Fuentes, a Uruguayan and president of the Ibero-American Press Correspondents Association (ACPI); Guadalupe Ruiz, vice president and former president of the Press Association of Huelva; María José Maestre, journalist for Canal Sur Huelva and former president of the Press Association of Huelva; Inma León, journalist for El Español newspaper and commentator on Canal Sur and RTVE; and Rocío Romero, a journalist involved in various nationally broadcast programs.

Before the roundtable, messages from journalists Paloma del Río, well-known for her commentary on rhythmic gymnastics and the Olympic Games for years on RTVE; Rosa María Calaf, TVE correspondent in several countries; and Sonsoles Ónega, recently awarded the Planeta Prize and television presenter, currently at Antena 3, were projected. They shared their thoughts on the role of women in journalism and the media."

"The XI Ibero-American Press Meeting is coordinated by Mari Paz Díaz, Juan F. Caballero, Rafael J. Terán, Pedro G. Gabo, and Jaime de Vicente, sponsored by the Caja Rural del Sur Foundation, the City Council, and the Provincial Council of Huelva. The exhibition 'Pioneras' can be visited until Friday, January 5th."
