Huelva pays tribute to Víctor Márquez Reviriego on its Walk of Communicators
The bust, created by Alberto Germán Franco, joins those of José Ponce Bernal and Jesús Quintero near the Jesus Hermida Communication Center.
Journalist Víctor Márquez Reviriego now has a sculpture in the Walk of Communicators in Huelva, next to the Jesus Hermida Communication Center. The mayor, Gabriel Cruz, along with the president of the Press Association of Huelva, Juan F. Caballero, the sculptor, Alberto Germán Franco, and the honoree himself, unveiled it this afternoon.
With this sculpture, the City Council of Huelva aims to recognize and pay tribute to the prominent role that this journalist, born in Villanueva de los Castillejos, plays within the profession in Spain. His career began in 1962 at the Odiel newspaper, and he has held positions such as editor-in-chief of the Triunfo magazine and deputy director of Cambio 16. He has received distinctions such as an honorary doctorate from the University of Huelva and the city and regional medals, as well as the National Journalism Award.
"Victor is a clear exponent of talent forged in Huelva during his time at Diario Odiel, which made the leap to national journalism to become a key figure, the quintessential narrator of some of the most important moments in the history of our country. However, he is not only an example of being a magnificent journalist and an enormous communicator—which he is, and we are very proud to say it out loud—but he has always carried his land and origins, Huelva and Andalusia, as a banner. The land of Huelva is present and has marked his work as a common thread in many ways, and it is a pleasure to enjoy it as a reader," said the mayor.
In addition to the bust unveiling, the City Council has installed an exhibition in the Multipurpose Room of the Jesus Hermida Communication Center titled 'Víctor Márquez Reviriego. Memory, Literature, and Journalism.' The exhibition includes documents, texts, and photographs that trace the author's life, witnessing significant events in the political and cultural life of Spain from 1962 to the present day.
The exhibition showcases original documents in display cases, all of Victor Márquez's books, and copies of magazines such as Triunfo, Tiempo de Historia, Cambio16, and Leer. Personal objects, documents from his personal file, including his 'Admission Exam,' and some texts in which Márquez Reviriego recalls his time at the Rábida Institute and in Huelva in the late 1940s and subsequent years are also featured.
The critical reception of his work is reviewed with articles by Álvaro Pombo, Delgado Gal, Antonio Prieto, José Antonio Gómez Marín, Gregorio Morán, César Alonso de los Ríos, Jaime García Añoveros, Manuel Barrios, Francisco Umbral, or Eduardo Haro Tecglen, among others. Additionally, a collection of photos from the author's personal archive is presented, helping to recall moments and personalities of Spanish political and cultural life from the 1970s to the present day.
